    • ]]>     Penguins team captain Sidney Crosby was named the Canadian Press male athlete of the year and presented the Lionel Conacher Award for a second time (he also won the award in 2007).

    Only 12 hockey players have ever won the Award and only six of them have ever received it more then once. So Crosby;s multiple time win puts him in the same class as past winners Bobby Hull, Phil Esposito, Maurice Richard, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

    The award is chosen from the total votes of a poll of sports editors and broadcasters from across the country. Crosby received 248 points including 72 first place votes. The Runner up was UFC fighter Georges St-Piere followed by Steve Nash and John Tavares.
