Penguins team captain Sidney Crosby was named the Canadian Press male athlete of the year and presented the Lionel Conacher Award for a second time (he also won the award in 2007).

Only 12 hockey players have ever won the Award and only six of them have ever received it more then once. So Crosby;s multiple time win puts him in the same class as past winners Bobby Hull, Phil Esposito, Maurice Richard, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

The award is chosen from the total votes of a poll of sports editors and broadcasters from across the country. Crosby received 248 points including 72 first place votes. The Runner up was UFC fighter Georges St-Piere followed by Steve Nash and John Tavares.

Sidney Crosby is known as one of the most anticipated new players to lace up a pair of skates in years, he is believed by many to have innate talent comparable to that of Legendary Wayne Gretzky (also known as “The Great One”) and other NHL super stars, an assessment that has led to the nickname, “The Next One”.

Crosby was drafted first overall in the QMJHL Draft on June 7, 2003 by the Rimouski Océanic and he quickly went on to win the QMJHL scoring title while setting new records for 16-year-olds during his rookie season. He achieved 54 goals and 81 assists during his first season with Rimouski.

On July 22, 2005 the NHL, upon ratification of its new collective bargaining agreement, held its first ever league wide draft lottery, that was won by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins then selected Sidney Crosby as tier first selection and the first overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. It gave Crosby the opportunity to play along side the man to whom he has drawn several comparisons, Mario Lemieux.

He played his first professional NHL game on October 5, 2005, against the New Jersey Devils, and registered an assist on a goal scored by Mark Recchi. He continued his success in his next two NHL games, registering an assist against the Carolina Hurricanes on October 7, 2005, and then scoring his first career NHL goal and adding two assists against the Boston Bruins the next night. Crosby’s first NHL goal came against goaltender Hannu Toivonen and was assisted by line mates Mark Recchi and Zigmund Palffy.

On Thursday, November 4, Sidney recorded his first 2-goal game against the New York Islanders in a 5-1 win. Sidney also put up an assist for a three point night. This performance came just after receiving recognition as the October Rookie of the month. November was a very exciting month for Sidney. On November 10, he scored a shootout winning goal on home ice, against the Montreal Canadiens (Crosby’s favorite team growing up). The 18 year old sensation scored the deciding shoot out goal on a backhand shot, roofing the puck past goaltender Jose Theodore, sending the net minder’s water bottle skyward and the Mellon Arena crowd into a frenzy.

Just six days later, in Philadelphia, he was high sticked by the Flyers’ Derian Hatcher during regulation play, cutting his lip and chipping his two front teeth. However, the rough-housing only seemed to ignite and inspire the talented youngster, as he scored the game winning goal in sudden death overtime to defeat the Flyers.

We had some photos submitted to us recently revealing a real shin digg of a party at Mario Lemieux’s place where the Stanley Cup ended up going for a swim in the pool. And according to NHL Stanley Cup legends and past stories, it was not the first time that the Stanley Cup has been in Mario’s pool.

“So … how did Lord Stanley’s mug end up in the bottom of Mario’s pool? After the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first Cup win in 1991/1992, the team was invited back to Mario’s palatial home to celebrate. The house featured an in-ground swimming pool. The pool’s decorative highlight was a four-tier neon-lit waterfall. During the course of the party, Penguins goaltender Tom Barrasso climbed up the waterfall with the Cup, and had his photo taken. After much more of this, the Cup was left atop the waterfall and the party went on. Meanwhile, defenseman Phil Bourque, who had been enjoying a frosty alcoholic beverage or two, decided to scale the waterfall. According to legend, clad only in his underwear, Bourque lifted the Cup and hurled it into the pool, where it sank ignominiously to the bottom. Since that infamous day, the Cup travels with security escorts assigned by the NHL.”

—

Update:We have found the photos on other blogs and websites (no surprise as most email forwards travel fast …) however most have been removed out of respect to Mario (and the people in them whom we can not identify), so we have done the same. (The photos are still posted on some blogs such as this one- if you still wanted to check them out)

Mario Lemieux founded the Mario Lemieux Foundation in 1993 shortly after he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s
disease and has donated millions of dollars to various area institutions since that time. At the time he was probably having his greatest NHL season and was on pace to break and establish a new NHL scoring record. However he became ill and was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease.

Mario is now 12 years cancer free since his successful battle with the disease and his experience has led him to focus on different ways to help assist those whom are not as fortunate as he was. Mario devotes much of his time to the Foundation raising funds to help reach the ultimate goal: a cure for cancer. The Foundation has been successful with a long list of achievements including a few listed here below. To see more achievements or to support the foundation then you should check out the official Mario Lemieux Foundation web site.

For those that may not know, Sidney Crosby is a young professional hockey player whom currently plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey league (NHL). He was the first pick overall of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and one of the leading scorers during the 2005-06 NHL season finishing 6th in scoring with 102 points.

He is often known as the Next One and certainly is star player material as in his first season alone he led his team in scoring and has already broken team records set by Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux, and league records such as being the youngest player to reach the 100 point mark in their rookie season.

Sidney Crosby has been viewed by many as hockey’s next great talent, one who might be good enough to rival Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, a title that many young up and coming stars have been given but have never been able to live up to.

Crosby continues to build upon his early NHL successes, still earning many firsts and continuing to break both team and league records. At the young age of 19 led the NHL with 120 points (36 goals, 84 assists) to win the Art Ross Trophy and he lead the Penguins to a 47-24-11 record and their first playoff game since the 2000-2001 season. His leadership was also recognized by the team, as they named him the team Captain in May making him the youngest team captain in NHL history.

The Sidney-Crosby.info site is interested in getting information and photos of Sidney Crosby from other fans to share with everybody (since this is a fan web site!), therefore if you have something to share with the rest of us Crosby fans then let us know and we will consider adding it to the site (as well as cite source).
Sidney Crosby has recently been named the winner of the 2007 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s top athlete after he became the youngest player to win an NHL scoring title. The trophy, named after a former sports editor at the Toronto Star, was first being presented in 1936 to Dr. Philip Edwards (who won five career Olympic medals in middle distance track), and every year it has honoured the greatest athletes in Canada.

What is unique about this award is that it doesn’t discriminate, it can be won by man or woman, amateur athlete or professional star, new kid on the block or experienced veteran. The trophy is voted on each year by a panel of journalists from across the country.

Past NHL players who have also been recgonized with this reward have included Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Maurice Richard, Phil Esposito, Bobby Clarke, Guy Lafleur and Bobby Orr. Wayne Gretzky has won the Lou Marsh Trophy four times, more than any other athlete.
